While binocular teleidoscopes have been written about for over 200 years since first discovered by Sir David Brewster, very few designs with an effective “linked field of view” have been produced. This unique and lightweight design does just that. Using two individual 3 mirror equilateral mirror systems aligned correctly in a common binocular arrangement I have managed to create this unique optical effect, a seemingly “full field” view of kaleidoscopic patterns. Each marble at the end of the binoculars acts as a fisheye lens, which focuses whatever you look at into the three mirrors inside each tube, arranged in an equilateral prism shape. The prism is “hollow” with the interior being the mirrored surface, which reflects the light as it passes through the assembly, creating the geometric patterns you see when viewing. Due to the nature of vision and parallax error, the images/effect work best when viewing objects more than 5 feet from the observer.
